Bird crime across the UK showing no signs of stopping
The RSPB’s latest Birdcrime report highlights the ongoing illegal killing of birds of prey, such as Golden Eagles, Hen Harriers, and Peregrines, despite legal protections under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Between 2009 and 2023, there were 1,529 confirmed persecution incidents involving 1,344 birds, with actual numbers likely exceeding 5,000 due to unreported cases.
Most incidents occur on land managed for gamebird shooting, where birds of prey are targeted to protect game populations. A 2023 study found that up to 75% of Hen Harrier deaths are linked to illegal killing in these areas.

Recent cases include the poisoning of two White-tailed Eagles in Northern Ireland and the shooting of a Short-eared Owl in the Peak District. The RSPB is urging the UK government to license gamebird shooting to deter these crimes. Scotland has already introduced licensing under the Wildlife Management and Muirburn Act 2024.
