Information letter 1

On October 22–23, 2021, in Ulyanovsk, it is planned to hold the First All-Russian with international participation scientific and practical conference on the birds' feather cover. The purpose of the conference is to exchange information in the field of modern poultry research between collectors and professional researchers of the feather cover of birds.

To participate in the conference are invited: collectors, professional ornithologists (including ones specializing aviation), as well as specialists in related disciplines (genetics, zoologists, paleontologists, archaeologists, historians, ethnographers, museum researchers, educational institutions, organizations involved in the study of natural resources, etc.). We invite students of grades 8-11, mastering basic general education, basic professional and additional educational programs under the age of 18 inclusively to participate in a separate youth section (held online on the Zoom platform).

The program includes plenary and breakout sessions, as well as a round table on key topics:

• Collection and storage of collections of feathers.
• Fundamental ptylological studies: microscopic studies, pterilosis and ptylosis of birds, feather morphology, ontogenesis and molt.
• Feather cover as an object of applied research: population and taxonomic studies, determination of the sex and age of birds, biomonitoring, study of the diet of predatory animals, etc.
• The problem of poaching and the sale of feathers of rare bird species.
• Bird feather in culture, environmental education and enlightenment.

Venue of the conference: Ulyanovsk, st. Goncharova, 20, Goncharov Ulyanovsk Historical and Memorial Center-Museum (a branch of the Goncharov Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local History).

Goncharov Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local History posesses a large collection of bird feathers, which includes material on more than 230 species of birds from most regions of Russia. On the basis of the collection, the Atlas of Bird Feathers was published in 2016. In 2018, using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation, the first Russian-language site for feathers, www.featherlab.ru, was created, and a laboratory for the study of feather cover was equipped in the museum. The conference participants will be familiarized with them.

The working language of the conference is Russian.

Applications for participation in the conference

To participate in the conference, you must fill out and send an application to the organizing committee by June 1, 2021: feathers73@mail.ru. In response to your application, you will be sent a personal invitation with additional information (requirements for the design of articles, an approximate conference program, details about possible accommodation and meals, regulations on the work of the youth section).

The organizing committee reserves the right to reject submitted applications.

Publication of conference materials

A collection of materials will be published based on the results of the conference. Articles (up to 10 pages) must be sent to the e-mail address of the organizing committee before November 1, 2021. Publication in the collection is free. The publication will be included in the RSCI scientometric database.

Payment of expenses

Coffee breaks and excursions - at the expense of the host. Travel, accommodation and meals - at the expense of the guiding side.
